Men's Health: Healthy Men Do These 5 Things (Are You One of Them?) by Joyce Knestrick, CRNP, FAANP
Men, are you as healthy as you think you are? You may be surprised. Men have a 41 percent higher mortality rate and are more likely to die from eight out of the 10 leading causes of death. They are also more likely to have diabetes and heart disease, not to mention kidney stones, gout, emphysema and other ailments that don’t typically fall on people’s worry radar.
Don’t become a statistic! Do these five health-boosting things today:
- Get a checkup. Sixty percent don’t see a provider and miss early warning signs of problems.
- Break a sweat. Exercise lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes, but only 20 percent get the recommended amount.
- Eat well. A healthy diet reduces likelihood of physical impairment as you age by 25 percent.
- Sleep. Shut-eye helps you lose weight, lower stress, fight depression and reduce inflammation.
- De-stress. Things like exercise and sleep are two big stress busters, but if you can’t shake anxiety, make an appointment with a nurse practitioner (NP) to talk about treatment options.
